Woman, granddaughter killed in crash with SUV in North Carolina

Over the weekend, a woman lost her child and her mother in a tragic car accident in Lumberton, North Carolina. Losing a loved one in any type of accident is certainly a heartbreaking experience, but one can only imagine how devastating it must be to lose a child and a mother all in the same day.

Sometimes family members are able to gradually accept that fatal accidents happen, and these accidents cannot always be prevented. But according to police reports, the car crash that took the lives of the grandmother and her granddaughter over the weekend could have been prevented had the driver of an SUV been more careful while he was on the road.

The fatal accident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. on Saturday. A 38-year-old woman was driving a 2001 Mitsubishi on Millard Road. Her 9-year-old daughter and 56-year-old mother were both passengers in the vehicle. While the woman was stopped at an intersection to turn onto U.S. 74 Alternate, an SUV suddenly plowed into the passenger side of the family's vehicle.

The woman's mother and child were seriously injured in the crash because they were both sitting on the passenger side of the vehicle where it was struck by the SUV. According to police, the family's stopped vehicle was struck by the SUV after it had crossed the center line on the road. Police did not report was caused the SUV driver to cross the center line, but charges are expected to be filed against the driver for causing the fatal collision.

The driver of the Mitsubishi and the driver of the SUV survived the crash. Sadly, both passengers in the Mitsubishi died from their injuries after they were taken to a local hospital.
