Man charged in connection with fatal street-racing accident

A car accident in North Carolina resulted in the deaths of two people and sent one person to the hospital on Nov. 22. Police charged a 19-year-old Kernersville man with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and one count of pre-arranged racing in connection with the crash. Investigators believed that the man became involved in a road race with another car, which ran off the road and killed two people inside.

The accident occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Union Cross Road in Kernersville. A 1996 Honda Accord driven by the 19-year-old man was allegedly racing in the 1700 block with a 1999 Ford Mustang driven by one of the deceased victims. Investigators estimated that the cars reached speeds of more than 100 mph before the Mustang driver lost control of the vehicle and ran off the road, overturning several times. The Mustang struck several cars parked at a home.

Authorities pronounced the Mustang driver and one of his passengers, a 20-year-old Kernersville man, dead at the scene. Neither of the deceased victims was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. A second passenger in the Mustang, an 18-year-old Kernersville man, suffered minor injuries. Paramedics transported him to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Police said that the second passenger was wearing a seat belt.

Police held the Honda driver in jail pending a December court date. A secured bond was set at $100,000.

In some cases, the driver whose negligence caused a fatal crash may die as well. If that occurs, the family of a deceased victim could seek financial relief from the liable party's estate. A personal injury lawyer could provide assistance in filing a wrongful death claim against the estate of a negligent driver.
