Annual commercial truck inspection focusing on tie-downs

North Carolina truck drivers likely know that the annual International Roadcheck inspection conducted by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance is to run from June 6 to June 8. The inspections were taking place in all states as well as across Canada. Prior to the beginning of the inspection event, the CVSA released a flyer that provided tips for proper cargo securement.

According to the CVSA, the inspectors will make a point to check cargo securement in addition to normal Level 1 inspections. Inspectors will ensure that the load or the equipment that the commercial truck is hauling is properly secured. Tie-downs will also be inspected to ensure there is no wear or damage that could make them unsafe or dangerous to use.

Those who do not properly tie-down or secure the cargo to prevent it from shifting or falling from the truck will receive violations. Additionally, trucks that have insufficient tie-downs, loose tie-downs or damaged tie-downs will also be cited. In 2016, it was estimated that approximately 15 trucks and buses were inspected every minute.

During the 2016 inspection event, about 21.5 percent of the nation's trucks and 3.4 percent of drivers were taken out of service. This means that it is likely that there are drivers and trucks on the nation's roadways that could cause serious commercial truck accidents. If an accident does occur and it can be attributed to truck driver negligence or a failure to comply with federal trucking regulations, an occupant of another vehicle who has been injured might want to have the help of an attorney in seeking compensation from the at-fault party.
