Tips for mitigating dangers while riding a motorcycle

While it may be fun to ride a motorcycle on North Carolina roads, riders need to know how to keep themselves safe while doing so. If a person on a motorcycle wants to pass a vehicle, he or she should move through a driver's blind spots as quickly as possible. A motorcyclist should also check to ensure that the passing lane is clear. Those who are being passed should remain in the center of their lane.

People on motorcycles should also look out for large mirrors or debris that could hit them. Individuals who choose to ride at night should make themselves as visible as possible. Anyone who is riding at night is also urged to go slow and be aware of other vehicles or obstacles on the road. When operating a motorcycle in heavy traffic, riders should keep their bikes behind other vehicles on the road instead of riding alongside them.

During bad weather, it can be a good idea for a motorcyclist to ride in a vehicle's tire track. It is also important to ride slowly and use the brakes gently to avoid a skid or a crash. This is also good advice for riders who are encountering obstacles in the road, such as a railroad track, speed bump or sewer grate.

A motorcycle accident may lead to traumatic brain injuries, broken bones or other serious health issues. Motorcyclists who are hurt in an accident caused by a negligent driver may be entitled to compensation. A financial award may help pay for an injured victim's current and future medical bills or make up for lost wages. An attorney may use physical evidence or camera footage to show that a driver made an improper left turn or otherwise acted negligently just prior to the accident.
